Farrell Clan Talk

Hugh Farrell, a famous Longford historian, visited Meán Scoil Mhuire, to talk to second years about the history of the Farrell Clan and the link between the Farrells and Longfort – ‘Longfort Uí Fhearghail.’ The Farrells are descended from the fifth invasion of Ireland by the Milesians, and Hugh traced their history down through the ages to present day, even mentioning many famous Farrells such as Mick Farrell (the series Mash’), Glenda Farrell (actress), J.P. Farrell (First President of the GAA in Longford), Frank O’Farrell (manager of Man. United), James T. O’Farrell (novelist).

Hugh was accompanied by Linda Farrell, a past pupil and organiser of the Farrell Clan Schools Heritage Project 2026. Such a loss to Longford was the demolition of the Farrell Castle beside the Barracks in 1971, but Linda has ensured a busy summer for the second years as they can visit so many other Farrell castles in Co. Longford-Moydow, Barry Castle, Moatfarrell, Elfeet, Rathcline. Linda spoke of our songs such as Seán O’Farrell in ‘The Rising of the Moon.’ Buíochas ó chroí le Hugh agus Linda. Bhain gach uile duine taitneamh agus tairbhe as an gcaint.
