For the 1.1 million (approx.) people living in the State who have a disability of some form (2022 Census figures), access to public transport and navigating streetscapes in our towns and cities can be a significant barrier to independence. With that in mind, a small group travelled from Meán Scoil Mhuire to the Wayfinding Centre in Glasnevin on April 29th.
The mission of the Centre is to provide a safe indoor space that replicates real world challenges people with any form of reduced mobility or disability may encounter. The group were guided around the large, immersive training space by Eva, who shared a wealth of knowledge and practical advice on moving safely through road crossings, onto various modes of public transport and how to avail of assistance if required on public transport.
We got great amusement from exploring the decommissioned Aer France plane which is also used for access training (photo of the group below)
After Wayfinding, we took a short stroll in the sunshine to the National Botanic Gardens to admire the colour and beauty of the plants there.
