On Thursday last, Ms Cunningham and Ms O’Farrell brought their 5th year Ag Science and Home Economics students on a trip around local farms. First up was O’Hallerans hens and dairy farm. Here, Rebecca and Derek showed the girls how they pack and grade the eggs, as well as their robot for milking the cows. The O’Halleran farm is family ran and have just signed a contract with Lidl to supply eggs.
Next up was Longford Veterinary Practice, where practice manager Una introduced the girls to Rachel, the new vet, and Vera, the resident veterinary nurse. The girls were educated about the latest in veterinary care.
Finally, McCormacks pig and dairy farm was the final stop. Here, Roz and Roy showed us around their very impressive integrated pig farm and discussed the challenges faced by pig farmers. Roy explained the importance of grass measuring for cows and the role technology plays in it.
Overall, the girls were very impressed by the innovation and advancement in farming and were reminded of the importance of local farms to our economy and how we should all buy local.
