Rugby
Rugby is still a relatively young sport in Meán Scoil Mhuire, having been introduced in 2023, but the progress made in that short time has been remarkable. What started as a small group of students eager to try something new has grown into a fully established rugby programme, with the school now fielding First Year, Junior, and Senior teams.
Many of our players proudly represent both the school and Longford Rugby Club, highlighting the strong connection between the two communities. Some students have also had the honour of representing Leinster at underage level, reflecting the growing strength and talent within the squad.
The team’s style of play reflects its development — fast, fearless, and built on hard work. The squads play with ambition in attack, looking to move the ball into wide channels where their pace can shine, while the forwards bring determination and physicality to every contest. Their defensive structure has also strengthened year on year, with a strong focus on collective pressure and brave tackling.
Strong teamwork and commitment have been central to the team’s rise. Powerful ball carrying helps the team consistently get over the gain line, while emerging talents across the squad continue to develop with every match.
In recent years the school has entered the Senior Cup for the first time. The squad carries both pride and excitement as they represent Meán Scoil Mhuire on the provincial stage. Looking ahead, the school also plans to enter the Junior Cup in the future, further highlighting the rapid development and growing strength of rugby in Meán Scoil Mhuire.
