Transition Year

The Transition Year (TY) at Mèan Scoil Mhuire offers students a unique opportunity to grow both personally and academically. The programme is designed to help students mature, develop social awareness, explore potential career paths, and prepare confidently for the Senior Cycle.
TY promotes experiential learning, creativity, responsibility, and confidence through a balanced and varied curriculum.

The TY Programme runs for the full academic year and provides a wide range of enriching experiences, including:

  • Core Subjects
  • Modular Studies
  • Work Experience
  • Community Engagement

Students also participate in numerous trips, workshops, and guest speaker sessions to enhance their learning experience. These may include:

  • Outdoor Education and Adventure Activities
  • Team-Building and Leadership Days
  • Cultural Visits and Theatre Trips
  • College Open Days and Career Events
  • Community Initiatives

In recent years, students have participated in the All-Ireland STEM Passport and Leadership Programme, where they can achieve a Level 6 qualification from universities. Students may also have the opportunity to take part in an overseas trip, further broadening their horizons.

Assessment in TY is continuous and holistic, focusing on personal development, participation, and engagement. Methods of assessment include:

  • Portfolio work
  • Self-assessment
  • Teacher observation
  • Project work
  • Presentations

Reports are issued twice yearly, and a Parent-Teacher meeting takes place during the academic year. Students receive ongoing feedback and, upon completion of the programme, are awarded TY Certificates of Achievement and awards.
The Transition Year at Meán Scoil Mhuire provides a supportive and dynamic environment where students can discover their strengths, build confidence, and prepare for the challenges of Senior Cycle and beyond.
