Today, our school community gathered in St. Mel’s Cathedral for our Opening Mass, marking the beginning of a new school year.

As Mercy Day approaches, we were reminded that this anniversary year, from Mercy Day 2026 to Mercy Day 2027, is a special opportunity to remember our shared Mercy heritage, celebrate the many ways in which Mercy continues to flourish throughout the world, and look with hope towards the future.

During the Mass, Fr. Michael invited us to reflect on the values of hope, courage and, of course, Mercy as we embark on this new school year. His words encouraged us to carry these values with us in all that we do, supporting one another and embracing the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

 A special thank you to Fr Michael, Gerry, our Religion and Music Departments, and, of course, all of our wonderful students who volunteered their time and talents to help make our Opening Mass such a meaningful and special occasion. We are truly grateful for the care, dedication and contribution of everyone involved.

Chess Club Begins!

DEIS Gaeltachta Scholarship Scheme 2026/27 – Deadline Reminder

A reminder to parents/guardians that the deadline to register your child’s interest in the DEIS Gaeltachta Scholarship Scheme 2026/27 is:

Monday, 21st September, 3:45pm

Applications received after this deadline will not be considered.

Parents/guardians registering their child’s interest must include all required documentation as outlined in the previous notice.

Documentary evidence confirming that the student has secured a place must clearly show:

• Student’s full name

• Name of the summer college or its official logo

• Total cost of the course

• Course start and end dates

• Course duration (2 or 3 weeks)

• Deposit amount paid

GRETB has confirmed that:

• Each DEIS post-primary school may submit up to 4 scholarship applications in the initial application round.

• 3-week course: Up to €950 or 85% of the course fee covered, whichever is less.

• 2-week course: Up to €820 or 85% of the course fee covered, whichever is less.

Where the number of eligible expressions of interest exceeds the places available, an internal random lottery draw will be used to allocate the available places, similar to previous years.

The draw will take place at 11:00am in Room 20 on Tuesday, 22nd September and is open to students who wish to attend.

U16 & U19 Basketball

Our u16 and u19 teams kicked off their season with an away game to the Bower Athlone on Wednesday.

Minus a few regulars, and having had limited opportunities to train with a full panel so far, both teams can be very proud of their performances.

A spirited display from the cadets was not enough to claim victory, with our failure to convert a lot of our chances being our ultimate downfall.

Fortunately the seniors made up for the loss with a comprehensive win executing efficiently on both ends of the floor.

Training continues on Tuesday after school with our next game in two weeks.

Gaisce Bronze Award Journey Begins!

TYs attended a talk on Tuesday from Gaisce representative, Mary Yore, where she outlined what the TY students must complete in order to achieve their bronze award!

TY Active – Longford Tidy Towns

As part of the TY Active module, our TY students recently volunteered with Longford Tidy Towns, helping to keep our town looking its best.

A huge thank you to Michael Keenan for providing the high-vis vests, litter pickers and bags, offering guidance, and sharing some fascinating history about Longford Town with our students.

TY Leadership Workshops

Our Transition Year students are currently enjoying engaging with team building and leadership workshops with Jim Maher, focusing on the skills and qualities that will support them both now and into the future.

Through a range of practical and challenging activities, students explore how to work effectively as a team, recognise and build on their individual strengths, and communicate with confidence. The workshops also encourage critical thinking, resilience, problem-solving and leadership, helping students develop the skills needed as they navigate the opportunities and challenges of life beyond school.
