On Friday 15th November we held our Green flag raising ceremony for the Water Conservation theme.

Principal, Mrs Mulrennan opened proceedings by
welcoming guests and students and acknowledging this great achievement for Meánscoil Mhuire.

Joining us in this celebration was Sr Elizabeth McNamee,Convent of Mercy,Environmentalist,
who initiated environment awareness in Meánscoil Mhuire
and who organises seminars with keynote guest speakers on Environmental themes.The most recent being the very successful ‘What future for our children’ and ‘biodiversity’ seminar in the Longford Arms Hotel on March 30th 2019.

Also in attendance was Andy O Dowd, Longford Tidy Towns Committee ,who has been a source of inspiration to us with his visits to talk to our students,and his tireless efforts for ‘Longford Tidy Towns’
which resulted in Longford winning the IBAL
‘Ireland’s Cleanest Town ‘ National Award in 2015.
Andy has been shortlisted for ‘The National Volunteer Award at a ceremony in Dublin on the 6th of December We wish him every success.

We welcomed Gary Brady Environment Officer, Longford County Council, who is a constant source of advise and support in our efforts to secure each green flag.
Among students present were Student Representative Council members and Green School Committee members.
Music was provided by Hannah and Megan Glennon.

Green School Co-ordinator Ms Margaret Healy expressed her gratitude to the management Mrs Mulrennan, Mrs Lyons all the staff for supporting the Green School initiatives .To John our caretaker for his help and support.To Miss Killian for her needlework on the green flag, Ms White for organising music , Bean Ui Nuallain and Ms Lyons for photography and all who helped in any way.

We also wish to acknowledge the efforts of the students on the ‘Student Representative Council ‘and their teachers Mrs McCaffrey and Mrs McManemy for their excellent iniatives and presentations during the recent climate action week and also to Ms Foley for supporting the committee in their efforts to source and supply reusable water bottles with the school name!
They were proactive in replacing single use paper cups with reusable cups in the school canteen in 2019 and are currently working on the elimination of single use plastic bottles.
A special word of thanks to the Greenschools Committee members for their energy,enthusiasm,hard work and dedication in securing this internationally recognised award .Well done to all of you.You are a credit to your school and your families.

Following the Ceremony refreshments were served.
Thank you to Anna B Corrigan (Cake art) for her fantastic bespoke cake for the occasion.
